Starting off mark II
Ok, so I've been working on changing my life style for a couple of years now. I am getting there slowly, and I guess thats not so bad cause then there is less chance of crashing.... or so my theory goes (and I'm sticking to that!). But now I am feeling better within myself, my fitness is no longer embarrassing and it is time to move on to the next phase.... what ever that will be.
I got a dog a couple of months ago. That was really good motivation. Where I could have talked myself into staying in bed, the dog will not allow that to happen. So now instead of going for a walk 3 or 4 times a week, we go at least 6. I also now come home from our walk and do a little resistance. I am trying to push myself past the pain barrier but it is something I have always had trouble with (I guess lack of time doesn't help that either). I have to confess that I have NEVER been a sports person, but now that I have discovered fitness I want to go where I've never been before *grin*
Alls I need is just that little push... that extra motivation that is going to get me to my ultimate goal. That push that is going to make me feel the pain... and enjoy it.
Maybe this blog will help?? Worth a go I guess.

Congratulations!
Trish, I'm really happy that you've found an interest in fitness. Like you, I am not a gym and fitness person. I've learned to be one because of the benefits: health, attractiveness, and endorphins! Also I find that many people who are into health and fitness started like you and I: a few simple steps got them started and improved their overall quality of life and turned them into encouraging and positive people.
Take things at your own pace. You don't have to push past the pain: make sure you are using the right form for your exercises. Remember the secret of one: today you can probably do one more than you could yesterday. Try to incorporate small activities and exercise into everything: park at the end of the block, walk one more block with your dog, get up and deliver things at work that you could put in interoffice mail...
Good luck!
Congrats Trish and good luck
Congrats Trish and good luck to you. Here is another idea for you I found you might try as well if you can find any around you.
There are places, hard to find, but places that have swimming pools you can rent for an hour or a half hour where you and your dog can both go swim together. It is much cleaner than a lake and a heck of a lot more fun than swimming laps and if your dog likes water you will both have an awesome exercise filled time. They usually have games and toys and things you and your dog can play with, they even have doggy life guards at some who are trained to give CPR. It can be a little expensive but we go at least once a month if not twice. Ask your vet if you have trouble finding one.
The pools started out as therapy for dogs that had injury or arthritis and so on. Some are just for dogs only and are kind of small. We both prefer the ones we can both get in and play. The Dog only ones he will get in and swim a bit but soon get out and sit beside me wanting me to come in. My dog is a 150 lb, yes he is that big and solid muscle, black lab. When he hits the water you know it and swimming with other dogs is too dangerous for the other dogs. He knows his own strength and is gentle with other dogs but one misstep paw on a little dog and it is going under in a hurry. So pretty much I am the only one that can play with him in the pool. We wrestle and he chases me and believe it or not when i turn around and telling I am gonna get him he turns and starts swimming away full speed just smiling and tail wagging. If he gets out while I am chasing him i am in trouble though cause he comes running back at me full speed even for me thats a lot of mass of wet dog to catch in a pool.
Oooohhh! I want a dog now!
Oooohhh! I want a dog now! That sounds like such good idea. Unfortunately my apartment doesn't allow pets...
Congrats on finding a creative way to work some exercise into your daily routine :)
Thanks
Thanks heaps for the great support, encouragement and suggestions. The swimming does sound like a lot of fun. As there are no dog baths here, I will wait till summer comes round again and give it go at the beach.
We went mountain biking last weekend. Was lots of fun, but hard work manipulating the bike and dog. He got to have a really good run though, and I'm sure the more we do this, the easier it will get. The worst part was at the beginning when he decided to stop dead for a sniff! Or go the other way around a tree! Nearly tore my already keyboard worn hand. I quickly learn't words to help guide him and he responded quite well.
I have to say that I did crash and burn at the end of the week. This was more due to work commitments than anything else, but a couple of mornings off walking pulled me through easy enough. Should be back on track for my weekly routine now. I have been reminding myself of the secret of one and found that really useful. So thanks again for your encouragement...
