Women Should Lift weight to burn more fat

The most common falsehood I hear even on these forums several times is that women do not want to lift weights because they thing they will get bulky. This is not possible, your women, you can't get bulky without the aid of pharmaceuticals. Lifting weight will tone the muscle but it will not make it big. The toned muscle will burn more fat.

I recently came across a great article from a mother of 4 that can explain it better than I can and has been down that road before.

Women should lift weights, and lift them correctly, when you add a good diet to that the fat will melt off and you will feel better than you have felt in years. I have personally seen several women both young and old, many that have had children look better than they did in high school from simple weight training. Give it a shot, you got nothing to lose but fat.

Women should lift weight

I totally agree with you dude. Some basic body functions are identical in men and women. The process by which the body tends to burn more fat if there is more lean mass works for women as well. There is not risk of becoming bulky. A lean and toned muscle is actually considered more sexy and attractive. But bear in mind that what happens outside the gym is always more important that the workout per se. In the pyramid of the body builder I will put: workout at the base, sleep as a second level and nutrition at the peak.

I agree, although I (a woman) can't say I'm a fan of the terms "toning" or "lean and toned". IMO, they are just some of many terms that have been invented or redefined in order to make women more comfortable with the idea of putting on muscle, which is what weight lifting does. The very concept that you can make a muscle "lean"--as if a muscle contains fat to get rid of or is made up of anything BUT muscle"--is ridiculous. The only way to make a muscle "leaner" would be to not exercise it (this would also be known as "muscle wasting"). One of my all-time favorites--very popular with the Pilates crowd--is "long and lean", as if one could actually lengthen their limbs through exercise.

Women: Yes, you will put on muscle (make your muscles bigger) if you start a proper weight lifting program. No, you will not look like Arnold--or even Matthew McConaughy--with breasts. You probably won't even look like Madonna--unless that's what you're going for and even that would require the right genetics and probably a very strict diet most of us wouldn't want any part of. So relax, and start lifting!

I'm just getting back into the habit of exercising regularly, but I've always enjoyed lifting weights way more than any cardio or stretching stuff. Lifting weights is such a great way to get variety into a workout because there are so many different exercises that you can do if you are tired of your regular workout.

My only complaint is that when I was a member of gyms in the past (I just workout w/free weights at home now), I had trouble with some of the weight machines being to large even at the smallest setting, i.e. the seat would be too far away/too high or other similar problems. I like free weights more, but sometimes without a spotter it is safer to use a machine if you are closer to your max out weight.
