Protein & weight loss
Hi guys/gals,
I am currently 5"10 and 200 LBS, I am very athletic and workout a couple times a week. I have already lost approx 25 lbs over the last 6-8 months and I would like to loose close to another 20 lbs. My question is being a person trying to loose weight being already on the heavy side would you suggest protein shakes before and after gym sessions or could it potentially add weight? Thanks for your responses!
I love the site, lots of great ideas and great motivation!
cheers,

Yes and No, hows that for an
Yes and No, hows that for an answer.
First off protein shake before and after workouts, I very highly recommend. When you are loosing fat sometimes you will lose muscle as well. this is a natural reaction from the body. Fat stores are going away your body says hey wheres my fat going I better shed some muscle so it doesn't use it all up. Muscle is expensive for the body to maintain. It costs a lot of calories.
So, taking whey protein before and after will definitely help prevent this because your body will see the protein in your food and well it gets frustrated because it is easier for it to break down and use digested protein than your muscle.
Now the Protein though is extra calories. So make sure your getting a higher quality protein, Optimum Nutrition or even the GNC store brand, which is made by Optimum is much much better than walmart cheap stuff. the wallmart stuff is yes whey protein but not as purified and contains a lot more of the milk fats and sugars which is the bad stuff you do not want and will be a higher calories. I would do maybe 1 scoop before and one scoop after and see how it goes. You might be able to get to 2 scoops after but you will have to judge that later on, remember it is calories, too many calories will be stored as fat. So if you add the protein and you stop losing then you are going to have to chose something else in your diet somewhere to give up or change. while the calories in the protein powder is low, like you might have to switch from 2% milk to 1%. Something like that.
Oh yeah and it could
Oh yeah and it could potentially add weight, however the weight would be muscle so I wouldn't worry to much about it. I do not put much stock in weight. I am 6 ft 260 lbs, however I have 12% body fat so I am rather lean.
Great thanks for the help, I
