The point of this is cardio, so it will depend, but 20 minutes is the bare minimum to get your heart rate up and start burning calories. I've heard getting to 45 minutes is a good goal to get to for starters. I'm currently doing the bike machine for 30 minutes, myself.
Do what you can handle -- there's no point killing yourself but if it's too easy you'll never improve your fitness level. Your body needs a certain degree of challenge.
Advice depends on what you're training for (fast walking, running, weight loss?) and where you are physically. If you get the chance to go hiking - it's awesome. On a machine, your muscles function rhythmically whereas while hiking on uneven terrain you use different muscles at different times.

I'm sure speed and incline makes a difference. What advise does anybody have on where to start?
