Lunges. You really feel
Lunges. You really feel them in your thighs. |

You can not target specific areas
You can not target specific areas for weight loss. No matter what you may have heard or thought. Can not be done. Fat cells are like little balloons that fill up. When you start to burn fat your body will take it from wherever it wants to and in no particular order. The release of fat from the body is part of the circulatory system. So basically it will get released into the blood stream to be used or excreted from where it wants to. You have no control over it. Exercising a particular muscle like lunges, will work the quads very well and is an excellent exercise, I have done them for years in several variations, from walking lunges to static lunges and dynamic lunges, and they can build the muscle up, do it enough and it may cause the shape of the leg to change and the skin to look tighter, however that is just the muscle growing and causing the skin to stretch some. However, The fat would still be there. Sadly, millions of people do hours of sit ups and crunches hoping to trim their waist line or get duped into buying something on TV that works just their abs to lose belly fat, it just doesn't work that way. While yes they may burn some fat because they are exercising, a good all over exercise routine will essentially burn much more fat faster than just working the one area. For some simple evidence of that, ever seen someone that lost 50 lbs or more, their face itself looks noticeably thinner. However they never exercised their face. Fat just comes away from where it wants to when it wants to. It generally comes off fairly evenly however while loosing weight do not be surprised if one leg gets a little thinner than the other. This is actually quite common, it will even out as you continue to lose. |

Oh Yeah
I forgot, you can blame your parents for this as well. Why some people put on fat in thier belly, or legs, or rump more than others. Well because where you put on fat and in what order is genetic. Same is true for where you take it off. Some people lose it from thier belly first, some lose it from thier legs, some lose it from thier rump first. Where it comes off at just like where it goes on at is all genetics. |

Big muscle groups are good
If you want to lose weight from your thighs, like Xyon says, you can't spot reduce. There's two things I'd want to keep in mind (note- i'm not a personal trainer, I just read a lot): 1. While you can't spot reduce, if your goal is to drop body fat from particular areas of your body then you should work your largest muscles. Why? Because muscles are your body's biggest fat burning furnaces. They'll burn fat for you all day and all night, not just when you're at the gym. The denser (or larger) those muscles are,the more fat they'll burn. You WILL NOT get large muscles from working them hard if you're a member of the fairer sex, but they will burn more energy for you and help you lose more fat the stronger they become. 2. With that in mind, off the top of my head, and in no scientific order, the largest muscles in your body are your legs, back and chest. Try lunges, squats, rows, lateral pulldowns/chin ups, pushups, dumbbell flys and bench press. If you don't like the gym, and lots of people don't (especially ladies who don't like being ogled by meat heads in the weight section), try googling bodyweight exercises, and look for exercises that target the muscles i list above. After a quick look at the bodyweight search I just suggested, I found http://www.expertvillage.com/interviews/bodyweight-exercises.htm, which looks to have some good basic simple exercises, complete with videos by a professional PT. Enjoy! |

I've heard that there is not
I've heard that there is not such thing as spot reduction, but well who's better to explain this than an Exercise Science Professor: |
