Mind-Body connection -- Body Scan Meditation
Years ago I attended a course on dealing with stress and pain. It was an excellent course based on the book: Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn (it's still in print and available at amazon.com). I highly recommend it for everyone.
The approach in the book is based on using Buddhist principles of Mindfulness, Meditation, and Yoga.
The program is not religious however and is suitable for all religions and no religion. You just learn the techniques that were developed by Buddhists. I can’t emphasize enough that this course changed my life. I learned how to be happy and enjoy life.
One of the first meditations we learned is called a Body Scan. I think this meditation would be very useful for those who are beginning an exercise program (actually for anybody in any exercise program).
I found a simple version on this website:

Try it everyday. It’s also very relaxing.

I recently began practicing yoga
and though I feel like it is helpful in terms of strength training and toning, I have not yet seen any results in terms of weight loss. I was wondering if you had any suggestions for the best type of yoga for weight loss or if there was anything I could add to my workout to make weight loss possible, or more efficient. Thanks for the helpful post.
Yoga and weight loss
I'm not an expert on yoga so I really can't help much in that department- I do know their are several kinds of yoga ( stretching and strength, breathing, meditating etc.)
My comments about meditation are really meant to help someone feel happy in themselves. I think in this way it can help with weight loss because you don't then feel the need to eat because your unhappy. I don't believe their are any magic bullets for weight loss. As for yoga and weight loss I think the kind that develops strength should help if you keep at it. I think what is really important is to develop your body mentally as well as physically .
