Trail Running - You should try it!

Get yourself into trail running and you will discover the most suprising element of this sport: peace.

Trail running has never been hotter. In the past 10 years there has been significant growth in the number of events for athletes, trails are opening specifically for runners and gear is being tailored towards the avid or recreational trail runner.

Why trail running you may ask? It is quite simple. Trails offer serenity and peace that you often can't find anywhere else. But you still need to be prepared so here are a few tips.

Trail Tune Up

Getting into train running is similair to starting a regular running program. Start by simply alternating between a hiking and running. At first you may spend more time hiking but as your body gets stronger you will be able to gradually decrease the amount of time you hike and increase your running time.

Runners may be familiar with the 10% rule, meaning that you should increase your distance no more than 10% of the time, but because the ground is more forgiving, trail runners can bend this rule slightly. (note - running on gravel is like running on pavement)

But lets not gauge our progress by distance, lets use time. After all, a variety of factors such as weather, trail conditions and terrain can affect your run, and a trail that takes you 45 minutes one day could take you 90 minutes the next.

Ramp Up

You'll also want to build strength in your core, which will help ascending. "You'll often get a sore back, arms, neck and shoulder when ascending, but a strong core can help prevent it.

Ankles take priority too considering ankles are the most common injury since your footfall isn't always flat. First wear shoes that provide grip and stability like trail running shoes, not hiking shoes. Then strenghthen your ankles with plantar flexion and dorsiflexion. You may add a band to increase difficulty.

So to wrap it up, I highly recommend trail running, it adds variety, gives you fresh air and allows you to center and ground yourself. So go and find some peace and tranquillity the next time you lace up your running shoes.

In light and health,
