exercise with leg in a cast

Ok, I've been stuck in a cast for the last, well, almost 6 weeks after serious ankle surgery. They had to re-route a tendon to stabilize my ankle, repair several ligaments, and roto-rooter out some junky stuff inside the joint space. I've lost an inch or more on my casted leg in the thigh and I don't even want to know what I've lost in my calf!!!!

Here's one of my problems, I have horrible cramping now in my calf because I'm starting to bear a little weight on it. So if anyone has any ideas on how to get rid of them, please let me know! I'm still in the cast until at least Thursday.

Now, what can I do for exercises in the mean time? I've been trying some basic leg lifts and leg extensions (with no weights obviously!). Plus some ab crunches. I also have a 5 pound medicine ball at home and a 3 and a 5 pound dumbell.

Any advice would be much appreciated. I can't stand for too long or put too much pressure on the bad leg. I can, however, do seated exercises. Oh, and they need to be stuff I can do at home because I can't drive so getting to a gym is pretty much out. I also have a wheelchair as well, so if someone can figure out some good exercises to do it would be great!

Thanks a million!

A lot of pilates exercises are performed on your back... it might be worth looking into. You may or may not have to make modifications. For the cramps, try getting more potassium (bananas) and make sure you're getting enough water.

Thanks, I'll look into the

Thanks, I'll look into the potassium thing. I'll have to try to get some different fruit delivered to me. Water I'm drinking like it's going out of style because it's the only thing I've got in the house (not necessarily a bad thing!)

I'll look into the pilates thing as well. I didn't know that most exercises were done on your back. I'm ok with making modifications. Do you mean mat pilates or the machine pilates?

I just use mats. Most exercises are performed lying on your back; some on your side or sitting. There are very few exercises (essentially variations of plank) that are completed on all fours. I can't think of any exercises that you do standing.

My favorite beginners DVD is Pilates Beginning Mat Workout with Ana Caban (GAIAM). She also has a good intermediate mat workout DVD. She has good analogies for how to properly align and move your body.

Cool. Thanks! I'll have to

Cool. Thanks! I'll have to go look for that. No plank exercises for me. :)
