First Swim

Yesterday I went down to the pool over at the YMCA and had my first swim. Before that I did a quick 20 minute bike workout with the resistance set at 15 (max is 25) I really need to build my leg endurance up so I won't get blown away on the bike rides. After the bike ride I donned my new jammer length bicycling/swimming shorts and put on the goggles.

Man swimming for long periods of time isn't like it was when i was 12 and under taking lessons. Its really hard now. I wish I had stuck with swimming more. But I felt a good burn in my legs and shoulders so I guess thats a good thing. My goal was 30 minutes in the pool with doing sets of 100 meters with 30sec- 1min breaks in between. And I switched up my stroke between breast and crawl. I'm not sure if this a good training method but it felt good. I think the first week should be all about learning to breathe properly and get reacquainted in the water.

At about 25 minutes my left calf froze up and had a painful charlie horse. If no one has ever had one they are very painful, but interesting at the same time because you have no control over your muscle and they just pulse uncontrolably. I felt it was time to stop for the day. While in the locker room my right calf also froze up and I was left in the position of body builder standing on his toes. Sucks. Just gotta keep with it I guess and STRETCH more before I hop in.

charlie horses suck

I used to get charlie horses all the time in high school - usually while I slept; I'd wake up screaming sometimes. Drink more fluids... it helps prevent them. I was told to also stretch my legs more often and increase potassium consumption.

Thanks for your advice, I'm

Thanks for your advice, I'm very prone to getting them. Usually if I go for longer than usual runs or if I go swimming. Today I have been drinking water like its my job and I will go home and have some bananas for potassium. Tonight I'm going to hit the pool again and pray I don't get cramped up.
