Hi All-
Literally 4 weeks I came home from a nice long run and I had a great idea in my head to build a social fitness site. I drew up the plans and started to create the database for it. Then today I turn around and signed up for Gimme20. This site was exactly what I was thinking of (damn i wish I had built it earlier).
Besides that I'm a 22 year old student at University of Rhode Island. This is my final semester and will be graduating with a degree in Communications Studies. I take 2 days of classes and spend the rest of my time at the Newport Harbor Corporation in the marketing and sponsorship sales department.
After work I like nothing more to go for a run on the bike path through wakefield and kingston. I decided my goal for this season is to do a firm man competition which is a triathlon event in Jamestown. Last year I completed my goal of running the blessing of the fleet, and felt great.
As of lately I have been going to the YMCA gym to maintain shape and gain some upper body strength. I have been doing that for about 4 months and have great doing it. But i'm happy its staying lighter out longer and its finally getting warmer.
If anyone likes to do 6-10 mile runs after 5:30pm in the South Kingstown Area let me know!

Welcome
Welcome to the site! We had an influx of people today and had to upgrade the server. Hopefully it didn't effect you.
I'd love to hear your ideas on how to make gimme20.com better. Any suggestions?

Hi J.
I really like the site! I'm guessing your influx came in through downloadsquad.com, they are a relatively popular tech blog and had a little post about your site.
I'm still exploring all the features but one thing I was thinking of when I had the social fitness site was to have graphics of poser characters performing the exercise in the proper technique. Kind of like the poster the men's health includes in the back of each of their magazines. I have a couple more ideas but I want to explore the site alittle bit more.
Keep up the great work!
yup, that was it
It definitely was downloadsquad.com -- we really do appreciate the link from them. However, it was more traffic than we expected. We are doing some more upgrades tonight to ensure this doesn't happen again.
Regarding the graphics, Gimme20.com was made so that users could upload their own sequences of images. We figured with the ubiquity of digital cameras, our users might be able to create our own organize archive of sequences. This, so far, hasn't panned out.
Probably one of the reasons is because exercises need to be like wiki pages (edited by all, but keep revisions). Currently, we are debating in the forum about whether this is the best idea, or whether many exercises should be kept private to their creators (and other, that are well documented, will be public).
I'd love your thoughts.

I really like that idea of a wiki-style for exercises it makes sense. My thought on the exercises would've been more like an admin who would create like default exercises, say something simple like a dumbbell curl, which is pretty common exercise. But then you could also have users submit stuff that are different or unique, like doing a fartlick run.
Another idea I had was to have the same Google Map API as www.mapmyrun.com, make up routes using the feature or map out your most common run. Then people in the area could join up with you or try the route themselves.
I like your ideas
I like your ideas... should make some posts in the forums as well for making the site better that way more people will see your ideas (especially the routes idea).
jogging maps are cool, but...
Jogging maps are cool. But we need to make sure that gimme20.com doesn't become a site that tries to do 'everything'. We want to focus on workout tracking, weight tracking, goal settings and social motivation. If we can improve any of those four (like with wiki based exercises) -- then lets make it happen!
kind regards,
J
