Gliding - Not For Sissies!
I'm as guilty as the next person for refusing to join in some group fitness classes because I think they look silly or are beneath me. I said the same about step classes a few years ago. I've been a Marine as well as an ice skater and the whole concept just seemed (and looked) laughable to me. Having been dragged (most indignantly) to both classes, let me tell you what I learned... These are NOT for sissies! You will start to feel (and not in the "Oh yeah, do it to me again" way) muscles you didn't know you even had. It can take a heating pad and a deep tissue massage to recover to the point you can go out and salsa later!
Gliding looks easy, and it does start that way. You, two little purple discs and remixes of the current Top 40 crap your radio is filled with... But there will be puddles on the floor when you are finished. There are no weights involved and it's not very fast paced. It's a slow, controlled burn brought on by your own body resistance and alignment. Emphasis is primarily on the hips/thighs, but halfway through the class you get down on the floor and find new and intriguing ways to get your first charley horses in your biceps, shoulders and abs. By the time you hit the showers you realize that a sissie class just kicked every muscle in your body, all over that hardwood!
I'm not normally a big fan of group fitness. I like to train hard, and solo. Every now and again though, you would be well served to try something new. It breaks up the monotony that is so easy to succumb to and remind you why you fell in love with fitness in the first place.
