Protein Drink just before bed
Just wanted to share this with you guys, I'm getting some great results from, amongst other things, consuming a VERY heavy whey protein shake just before I go to sleep. I'm basically mixing that one, and only that one, twice as strong.
I know that your body can only absorb so much at a time, so I also consume protein throughout the day but I mix this one stronger because I find it makes my body sleep much deeper while it works to digest it. A deeper sleep allows the body to repair itself from a hard workout and I suspect I'm getting more muscle growth as a result. Plus, that extra burst of protein without sugar keeps me in a positive nitrogen balance for a longer period of time (you can look that up on your own).
Take it or leave it, just thought I would put it out there.

what protein drink are you drinking?
just curious..
I do the same thing, Whey
I do the same thing, Whey protein before bed. When I was really bulking up years ago another guy showed me another trick. Set an alarm midway though sleep mix another protein drink and go back to bed. The Whey protein sits very light, at least for me in my stomach. I made a ton of gains doing that. Also helped keep my metabolism up all the time. Only problem was keeping my metabolism that high I was hungry all the time. But I got plenty of fresh food and for energy I always ate slow digesting fiberous carbs from veggies. I do not do this now days as my sleep is more valuable to me. Another thing you could make your protein drink with Milk, some people use water, but Whey is fast digesting protein, Mllk by itself contains both slow and fast digesting this is what I do now days to this gets you a constand stream of protein for quite some time in the night.
dwdastud? Are you looking for exact type or which protein. Whey is a prefered protein. As far a brand I am not too picky, typically I just hit GNC begining of the month and stock up with GNC brand but they do carry others there. Cookies and cream is my favorite flavor when by its self but I use vanilla and then just plain as well. Plain I use to mix with other stuff, when I need something with no flavor, like in a smoothy.
Good for weight loss or bulking up?
Is this method good for weight loss or to bulk up?
And does it make a difference with rice protein? I bought it from a naturopath and it is horrid but I have to drink it to get rid of it... Can't wait to finish it to get back on whey protein, tastes soo much better
Well in answer to your
Well in answer to your question, Whey is the best for building lean body mass. Lean Body mass is fat free muscle. So it will help you loose fat and help you build muscle both. Being a woman you really do not have to worry at all about bulking up if you were thinking it would make you muscular. It really takes a heck of a lot more than whey protein to bulk up the female body. However it will help you tone the muscle you have.
Taking whey before bed helps a great deal in several ways. Human Grown Hormone and testosterone which both are key to burning fat is mainly released into the body during sleep, these are both key things in the human body that releases fat into the blood stream and also consumes fat, which is why most people that do not get enough sleep begin to gain weight. Well the key nutrient these 2 hormones use is protein so basically you are giving them the fuel they need. Also the amino acids and lipids in the protein helps the body relax so you get a much deeper sleep help aiding in releasing the growth hormone. Then lastly since this give your body something to feed on so it keeps your metabolism going also aiding in fat loss. When you sleep for like 8 hours not having something in your stomach is bad. Your body does not stop while you are sleeping. In fact that’s when it works to make changes and repair your body so it needs fuel. If it does not have fuel to use then your body will start eating away muscle. Also if your metabolism slows down then your body will want to hang on to more fat to save it for later since your body thinks your not eating. This is also why you want to eat breakfast right away after you wake up.
I would be curious why you are taking rice protein? Honestly I see no purpose for it other than if you are a vegetarian or lactose intolerant so I would be curious as to why or the reasoning behind it?
I will give you a few tips on whey when you go back on it. Pay close attention to the type of whey it is, it will be listed in the ingredients. There are basically 2 major types of whey protein. There is Whey Protein Concentrate and Whey Protein Isolate. There are some others like Micro filtered and Ion Exchanged which I just do not buy into.
Whey Protein Concentrate is usually 70 to 90 percent protein. The rest is things like CLA and lipids, it also contain very high amounts of growth factor such as IGF-1, TGF-B1 and TGF-B2. This also has a higher amount of fat and lactose as well so that might be a downside. We are talking minimal amounts of fat but still if you are counting fat intake then you should note this. However by far this is the best Whey Protein out there especially for general health and muscle building. I mean you do need fat in your diet it is good for you.
Whey Protein Isolate and Micro filtered is very high in protein most of it is 90 to 96 percent protein. There are also very small traces of fat and very small traces of lactose so if those are problems then this would be a better choice. The Micro filters they actually remove other things which in my opinion can’t be good for you. After removing fats and lactose filtering anything else out you lose the other good things in there. But Isolate can be good for lactose intolerant or people really watching fat intake.
No knowing this and knowing rice protein is only about 40% protein with the rest being other stuff. I can’t imagine why Rice protein would be an option.
Protein
Thanks for your very informative reply.
The naturopath gave me rice protein because I have an intolerance to wheat and dairy. But when I say intolerance all it means is I get a stomach ache and feel queezy. The only dairy I can stomach is yoghurt. I even hate the taste of all other dairy. When I eat wheat products I feel a bit off key and can only handle it in small doses.
Having said this, I think the whey protein is not enough to make me feel unwell. I have had it before, I find it a lot better tasting that rice protein and a lot easier to drink.
Rice protein is grainy and always seem to taste powdery no matter how long i shake it up or mix it.
From your message Whey Protein Isolate and Micro filtered sounds a lot better for me...
Are there any brands you would recommend as being more superior that doesnt have as many artificial ingredients?
Well I have good news and
Well I have good news and bad news. I can recommend a perfect brand for you but I just looked at where you lived and you might not want to get it.
Probably one of the best Whey Proteins out there is from Life Extensions www.lef.org , they have several with 100% pure Isolate. Unfortunately I know people in Canada still order it and complain about the shipping to Canada cost being high. So I am guessing that shipping to Melbourne is going to really be expensive.
So unfortunately I cannot recommend one where you live. However I can give you some tips on finding a good company where you live. Basically you will have a few companies there that make Whey protein. More than likely those companies will also make a multivitamin as well. So what you want to do is look at the multivitamin and its actual ingredients. Look in the ingredient list to see what type of magnesium it has in it. If it has Magnesium Oxide as its source of magnesium then stay away from that brand. Magnesium Oxide is the cheapest and worst form of magnesium and only about 5% of it is absorbed so even if they have 100 mg of magnesium which would be quite good however only 5 mg would ever absorb into the body. Why would they put this magnesium in there knowing this? Because it is dirt cheap and basically their vitamin is really containing the cheapest ingredients. So that tells me the company cares more about its profits than your health. So more than likely they take all kinds of shortcuts with their whey as well.
You also might find several blends where they contain both Whey Concentrate and Whey Isolate, they list the ingredients in order of which is the most. So if Isolate appears before Concentrate then it has more isolate in it and will be lower in lactose as well.
